General Rules of the School
Why We Have Rules
Discipline Explained, Not Merely Enforced
Particular attention is given at Don Bosco to discipline and character formation. But in the method of St. John Bosco, a rule is something a young person should be able to understand — not simply obey.
The rules below are the standing expectations of the school, drawn from our prospectus. We ask parents to read them with their children at the start of the session, so that everyone begins the year knowing where the lines are.

- Staying away from class without a valid reason is not permitted. To go home during school hours a written application from the guardian stating a serious reason is required, and the Principal’s permission must be obtained.
- Leaving the school without permission is a very serious breach of discipline.
- The reason for leave or absence must be entered by the guardian in the Leave / Absence Record of the calendar. Forging signatures is a serious fault and is liable to punishment.
- A pupil who has been absent may attend class only after the absence has been checked by the Principal in the Absence Record.
- No late-comer may enter class without the Principal’s permission. Pupils habitually late are liable to be punished or questioned.
- A student absent for more than six days continuously must bring the guardian for an explanation. Those taking leave on health grounds must produce a medical certificate.
- A student who absents himself or herself for one calendar month or more without prior information to the Principal will have their name struck off the register.
- A student who has less than 75 per cent attendance cannot be promoted.
- Pupils must rejoin classes after the holidays on the opening day. Any breach of this rule is considered a grave offence and is punishable with a heavy fine.
- During break time pupils are not allowed to go out of the school premises without permission.
- Students of Class XI and XII cannot leave the school without seeking written permission for any reason within the working hours.
- The school diary is a record concerning the student; every student should take care of it and bring it to class daily.
- If the diary is lost, written authorisation from the Principal is required to buy a duplicate. No student may exchange the diary with another for any reason whatsoever.
- Attend the school in due and proper uniform. Remember that cleanliness is next to Godliness.
- Students shall not wear jewellery or any decorative item, or apply nail polish, or keep long nails.
- Boys must have a proper hair cut at all times. Long hair as well as long nails are not permitted. Neat and tidy uniform, shoes and dress are a must on school days.
- Students are not allowed to bring mobile phones, calculators, pocket transmitters and any sort of magazines to school.
- Books, newspapers, periodicals, comics, camera, mobile phones etc. of an objectionable or distracting nature shall not be brought into the school premises. If found they will be confiscated.
- Pupils are responsible for the safe custody of their books, umbrellas etc. The school takes no responsibility for loss of any article.
- All must speak only English in the school premises.
- Be courteous at school and outside in your speech and action. Remember the words of J. H. Newman, that a gentleman is one who never inflicts pain.
- Smoking, chewing betelnuts and the use of tobacco in any form are strictly forbidden in or around the school compound. Offenders will be heavily fined or action taken.
- No act of indiscipline, insubordination, interference in the administration, or disrespect to any teacher, religion or community by any student shall be tolerated. A delinquent may even be expelled from the school.
- Irregular attendance, habitual idleness, disobedience, or conduct injurious to the moral tone of the school justify dismissal at any time of the year.
- Any damage done to the school building or furniture shall be made good by the pupils concerned. The decision of the Principal regarding compensation is final.
- Besides the two Unit Tests there are two examinations in a year, the Half-Yearly and the Annual Examination.
- Absence from an examination or Unit Test without sufficient reason is a serious breach of discipline and the offender will be considered as having failed.
- The Unit Tests and the Half-Yearly Examination will be taken into account at the time of promotion.
- Anyone using unfair means in an examination will be debarred from further examinations.
- Pupils whose dues are not cleared completely will be barred from sitting for examination, unless it is for due reason and with prior permission from the Principal.
- Students are not allowed to keep any book borrowed from the library for more than one week. It can be renewed if needed.
- If a book is lost or damaged, the student will have to make good the loss or damage.
- No one is allowed to borrow more than one book at a time.
- Books borrowed from the library should not be passed on to anyone else.
- Students who take a textbook from the library have to pay ₹50 for each book for the whole year.
- Don Bosco Higher Secondary School is owned and run by the Catholic Church. No disrespect to articles or images of religion and worship proper to the Catholic Church will be tolerated.
- No other external form of religious worship will be allowed in the school premises.
- The cultural and curricular activities of the school are conducted through the House System provided by the school authorities. All students are urged to take active part in it.
- No other sorts of association or union will be allowed. The House System provides ample opportunities for all-round education and development of the students.
- Any serious misbehaviour, or uploading anything against the school on social media that becomes a public scandal, is liable to bring about suspension or dismissal — even though it took place off the school premises.
- A student whose sickness is liable to be injurious to other students may be dismissed.
- One having been admonished, corrects himself or herself.
- The results of the examinations can be given to the parents and guardians, and that too only on the specified dates.
- Parents and Guardians are not allowed to see their children or interview teachers during school hours without the written permission of the Principal.
- Parents / Guardians are not allowed to meet and make phone calls to their son or daughter during class hours without permission.
- Those leading the children to school should leave them at the school gate.
- Parents are asked to support and co-operate with the school authorities for any disciplinary action positively.
- Provide sufficient uniforms (at least two pairs) and send wards to school neatly dressed in proper and full uniform with decent hair-dress.
- See that wards are diligent at their home work and lessons, and insist on neatness in text books, exercise books and personal appearance.
- Meet the Principal or Teacher-in-charge occasionally to discuss the progress of your ward, and look through the Regularity Record of the calendar.
- The school accepts no responsibility if through failure in wearing the school uniform, in bringing books to class, or on remarks written by the teacher in the Report Book or on the Absence Record in the calendar or signature of parents, a student is sent home for the above reasons.
- The school cannot be held responsible for accidents, small or serious, to pupils during the stay in the school or while taking part in sports and co-curricular activities within or outside the school premises.
- Though proper care will be taken to ensure the safety of the children during school hours, the school cannot be held responsible once the student leaves the school campus.
- Guardians and Parents are requested to make proper arrangements to collect children immediately after school hours.
“No school business will be transacted on holidays.”
A Word to Students
Draw up a study time-table with the help of your teacher or parents and adhere strictly to it. Attend the school in due and proper uniform. Be courteous at school and outside — in your speech and in your actions. These are small things, kept daily, and they are what a Don Bosco education finally comes down to.
